FKTI Summer Semester in Japan
The FKTI Summer Semester: A 28-Day Odyssey into the Heart of Japan
This is not a bus tour. The Fukai Kankei Taiken (FKTI) Summer Semester isn’t just travel — it’s transformation. It’s a globe-spanning leap into a world where ancient tradition meets neon-lit post-modernity, designed for students (ages 13–18) who want to do more than just see the world—they want to be changed by it.
THE VIBE: Deep Connections Only
In Japanese, Fukai Kankei Taiken means "Deeply Connected Experiences." We don’t do cookie-cutter tours or hotel buffets. We do immersion. You’ll navigate the Tokyo subway like a local, live in a Buddhist Temple, and be welcomed into local communities like you’ve always belonged. Thanks to our founder’s 30 years of local friendships, you’ll get access to places most travelers never see—private artists’ studios, sacred spaces, and the kitchens of local families.
THE JOURNEY: Phase 1: The Build-Up (Feb – July) Real adventure requires prep. Before you touch down in Tokyo, you’ll spend 5-6 months in weekly classes mastering the essentials:
The Language: Learn enough Japanese to make a friend, not just order a soda.
The Culture: From the "unwritten rules" of the Bullet Train to the history of the Samurai.
The Bond: You’ll get to know your group through team-building and gear-prep sessions so you land in Japan as a family, not a group of strangers.
Phase 2: The Odyssey (July) 28 days. Zero boredom. A "jam-packed" itinerary that hits the icons and the hidden gems:
Kyoto & Osaka: Learn the athleticism of Taiko drumming and the precision of Ukiyo-e (woodblock printing) with world-class masters, and dive deep into the neurochemistry of meditation with a 5th-generation Zen monk.
The Rural Deep-Dive: Eat seafood on the beach with an 94-year-old Ama diver and her friends, or grill fresh wild boar and deer in the mountains with a rural hunter and farmer.
The Modern Pulse: Navigate the electric energy of Harajuku and the raw. powerful history of Hiroshima.

Much of the learning happens beyond the classroom through field based science research, time on our farm, backcountry expeditions, and leadership in an intentional community on the coast of Maine. Students return home academically on track, and also with more confidence, perspective, and a deeper appreciation for community living and the natural world.

The Story School is an educational nonprofit live-action role-play summer camp located in the woods of Nature’s Classroom in Charlton, MA. Our unique approach uses role-playing and storytelling to motivate, educate, and transform campers. A trained staff of educators, game designers, and counselors immerses campers ages 8-17 in an epic adventure drawn from history, mythology, and literature (they live out a story they will read about in school).
By day, our campers battle fantastical monsters, solve interactive STEM puzzles, and live the tenets of a hero (courage, honor, and empathy). By night, our campers play board games, gather around campfires, and build crafts with their roommates, forging friendships that last a lifetime. In an open community embracing neurodiverse and LGBTQ+ campers, The Story School weaves together social education, leadership training, and hands-on learning into the fabric of our fantastical adventures. Spend your summer in a story and discover the hero within!
