The Environmental Science Program is a unique month-long summer program that lets students explore the wilderness and learn about the environment. It provides exciting outdoor adventure as students have fun hiking, biking, canoeing, and develop an awareness of environmental issues, ecology, and outdoor skills. Trips include a 12-mile canoe trip on the Charles River, an expedition through the salt marshes and tidepools of the North Shore, hiking the Blue Hills and Mount Monadnock. The last three days of the Program are dedicated to a back-packing trip to Mt. Washington, the highest peak in the northeast.

Students also participate in a hands-on environmental cleanup project, and are encouraged to return and become paid leaders in subsequent years.

The Envi Sci Program is based at Bowen Elementary School, 280 Cypress Street, Newton Centre near the Newton Centre T-stop.  We take students who will be entering grades 7 - 10 in September.

Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership integrates scientific research and education on a Maine coastal island to develop leaders prepared to address environmental issues in a rapidly changing world. Hurricane Island programs embed students in experiences that leverage the art and practices of science as tools for leadership and social change. Through personal and group explorations, students explore their own strengths as transformative leaders who can address the sustainability challenges facing our world today.

Our hands-on science curriculum offers unique opportunities for students of all ages to explore and connect with the natural world along the rocky shore of Hurricane Island. The young scientists who come to our programs will learn the tools of the trade as they navigate how to design and implement their own investigative studies. Field guides, binoculars, water quality testing equipment, compound and dissecting microscopes, transect tapes, and dissection equipment are just a few items we employ. Our staff are trained biologists and educators and we regularly enjoy having visiting scientists and lecturers to be part of our community. Spending time off grid, students will become familiar with sustainable practices on the island such as conserving water and minimizing food waste. Through living and learning together in a dynamic environment, students will begin to explore their own strengths as leaders and how they can leverage science as a tool for social change. Students can expect to leave the island with strengthened connection to the natural world and greater confidence to continue practicing leadership in their home communities. Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki is a four-month, phone-free, tech-light residential semester for motivated high school juniors. Students earn rigorous Honors and AP level credit that transfers smoothly back to their home schools while learning through a single guiding question at the heart of human ecology: how do people and the natural world shape one another? Much of the learning happens beyond the classroom through field based science research, time on our farm, backcountry expeditions, and leadership in an intentional community on the coast of Maine. Students return home academically on track, and also with more confidence, perspective, and a deeper appreciation for community living and the natural world.

Camp Chewonki Teen Backcountry Trips offer a powerful, screen-free reset in the outdoors where young people build skills and confidence away from the hustle of daily life. Whether hiking or paddling, participants learn the fundamentals of backcountry travel and living outdoors while developing resilience, sound decision making, and leadership through real challenges and shared responsibility. Traveling mile by mile as a group reinforces an essential lesson: caring for ourselves helps us show up for others. The values and habits formed on a Teen Backcountry Trip—self reliance, teamwork, and respect for wild places—give students sturdy footing as they navigate this exciting stage of life.

Join Alaska fishermen and catch wild salmon using traditional, sustainable commercial fishing methods.  Live with a fishing family or skipper and crew, in a remote cabin in the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.  This is paid work as a crew member, also called a deckhand, during the summer months - typically July and August.  Crew members learn the ins and outs of commercial salmon fishing, working in small aluminum skiffs to harvest fish from 1000-foot nets.  Our neighbors are whales, sea otters, foxes, seals, bald eagles, and Kodiak brown bear.  We work long hours under the midnight sun, and cook and live communally.
